History of Steak Sauce
Steak Sauce had its origins back in the 1800's.
Steak sauce was originally invented during the Victorian times in England before the world had refrigeration to keep meat fresh. As you might guess, meat didn't last long in the warm environment.
The chefs of the day had to develop ways of hiding it. They invented those classic sauces, Worcestershire Sauce and Steak Sauce.
The chefs did it with lots of vinegar to preserve the sauce, and tons of spices to distract the taste buds. The effect was to cover up the flavor of a steak that was "slightly past its prime".
Steak Sauce Today
Things haven't changed much with steak sauce in the last hundred years.
Steak sauces are still being sold that are waiting to cover up and hide the flavor of that great Sirloin, Delmonico or T-bone steak.
